Prague signs agreement with Taipei

: The mayors of the Czech capital Prague and Taiwan's capital Taipei signed an agreement promising to cooperate on culture, education and tourism on Monday (January 13) after Prague cancelled its partnership with Beijing last year.

Prague's city council decided in October to cancel the agreement with Beijing, that required it to commit to the 'one China' principle affirming that Taiwan is a part of China.

China regards Taiwan as a renegade province to be brought back under its sovereignty by force, if necessary.

The spat between Prague and Beijing, which has been rumbling in recent years, soured ties between the two countries in 2019. Both countries have tried to build a stronger political and business relationship.

Prague's mayor Zdenek Hrib met a delegation headed by Taiwan's Ko Wen-Je for the signing ceremony, which took place at the city's historic Old Town Hall. The two later planted a tree at Prague's botanic garden.

Czech President Milos Zeman has pushed ties with China, but Prague's government has been involved in diplomatic rows between the two nations, such as one over the mayor's refusal of a Chinese demand to eject a Taiwan official from a conference.
