Thousands of dead fish have washed up since late July on the banks of the Oder River in Western Poland, according to local authorities.

“I’d never imagined experiencing such a catastrophe, it is something you see in disaster movies,” said Pawel Wrobel, mayor of the town of Widuchowa.

Local businesses in Widuchowa, a popular angling destination, have been hit hard by the unfolding disaster. One local angler who owns fishing boats and rents rooms on the Oder River said he cancelled all future reservations when he learned what was happening.

“I had clients from Berlin and Frankfurt booked until the end of October, some Czechs called and tried to book. Other Czechs left during this catastrophe,” he explained.

The government has launched a crisis response and has promised support for those affected by the crisis. Despite numerous tests of fish and water samples conducted by Polish and foreign laboratories, it is still unclear what poisoned the Oder, Poland’s second largest river.
