Germany: Dozens protest Chinese FM Wang's Berlin visit outside Foreign Ministry

Dozens of people rallied outside the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin on Tuesday ahead of an official visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Protesters gathered to denounce China's Hong Kong policy and the treatment of its large Muslim Uyghur minority in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China.

People were seen holding banners and holding the former national flag of the First East Turkestan Republic, which is now associated with the Uyghur independence movement.

Nathan Law, a Hong Kong activist said: "For Hong Kong, once the pearl of [the] orient and the beacon of the freedom in Asia now is deteriorated due to an authoritarian state that arbitrarily deprives people of their basic human rights."

Law fled Hong Kong in July in the wake of the passage of the new national security law.

The protest was also joined by activists from spiritual movement Falun Gong and the German Green Party's human rights spokeswoman and Bundestag member, Margarete Bause.

"Germany holds the EU presidency in these months and with this position comes a particular responsibility to defend European values, to defend our basic values, and to address the issues of civil, human and democratic rights with China very very clearly and explicitly," she said while addressing the crowd.

A separate protest took place outside the Villa Borsig on the outskirts of the German capital, where Wang held talks with his German counterpart Heiko Maas.

Wang's visit to Berlin comes at the end of a five stop tour of Europe, having previously visited France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Norway, in the minister's first foray abroad since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
