German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi met at Berlin’s Borsig-Villa on Tuesday to discuss most pressing issues such as Hong Kong extradition, Taiwan conflict, international trade and coronavirus. At a press conference held directly after the talks, Maas called upon China to "fully apply" the "one country, two systems" principle in Hong Kong. He also stressed the necessity of "the rights guaranteed in the basic law to be respected," adding that this will remain EU’s benchmark in the context of further developments in Hong Kong. "Our joint European appeal remains that the election to the legislative council takes place quickly and without hindrance and that the restrictions of the security law be reversed," explained Mass, speaking of suspension of an extradition agreement.
