STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron headed to Moldova for official talks with the country's pro-Western president, Maia Sandu, on Wednesday afternoon.
Moldova shares a land border with Ukraine, and like is neighbour, has also expressed a desire to become a candidate for European Union membership
"My wish is that we can send a positive and clear message in response to that request,” said Macron during a joint briefing with Sandu.
EU heads of state and government plan to consider the candidate requests next week.
Any response will come with “conditions and procedures, which is normal” because joining the EU is a “path,” Macron said.
He added that he thinks Moldova and Ukraine’s requests should be handled the same way.
Macron and Sandu later walked around Chisinau and greeted people.
The two leaders also visited a patisserie.
