(12 Mar 2022) Moldovan authorities are providing free coronavirus testing and vaccination for refugees from Ukraine.
At the main welcome centre in the capital Chisinau, anyone can receive one of the many available COVID-19 vaccines.
But many of the Ukrainians coming to the country have already received their jabs, according to local authorities.
Dr. Aurelia Cotruta, who works with many refugees at the main health center of the Moldovan capital, says the COVID-19 situation in the country has been stable, although there has been a slight increase in recent days.
According to the health ministry, Moldova has reported over half a million cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, with around 11,000 deaths.
The latest official number of infections dates back to Thursday, with over 7000 cases, but the available graphics show a clear downward trend since February.
Moldova is a small Eastern Europe country with around 2.5 million people and is coping with an influx of tens of thousands of people since the beginning of the conflict.
The International Organization for Migration says 2.5 million people have fled Ukraine since Russia invaded more than two weeks ago.
The UN high commissioner for refugees, Filippo Grandi, also gave the 2.5 million total for refugees and said his agency estimates that about two million people are displaced inside Ukraine as well.
