Never let a crisis go to waste: Post-COVID reform agenda in emerging Europe and the region’s sustainable collaboration with the United States

The World Bank expects a 5.2 per cent contraction in global GDP in 2020. According to the European Commission and its latest, Summer 2020, forecast, GDP has already contracted by 3.6 per cent in the EU area. Emerging Europe is facing a recession deeper than after the 2008 global financial crisis. For the countries of the region, many of which face daunting vulnerabilities, it is critical to strengthen public health systems, address the challenges posed by informality, and implement reforms that will support strong and sustainable growth.
