As the EU awaits the triggering of Article 50 by the UK, Minister Donohoe considered the challenges and opportunities posed by Brexit for Ireland and Europe, and discussed how the Irish Government is approaching them. He reflected on the rise of populism across Europe but argued that the European Union remains as relevant as when it was first established and that Ireland’s future lies within the Union.

About the Speaker:

Paschal Donohoe is the T.D. for Dublin Central and the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform. Prior to his current role, he served as the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport. From 2013 to 2014, he served as the Minister for European Affairs at the Department of An Taoiseach and the Department of Foreign Affairs. He was elected as a T.D. for Dublin Central in February 2011. Prior to this, he was a member of Seanad Éireann from 2007 to 2011. Among other roles, Minister Donohoe previously served as the Chair of Ireland’s Future in Europe Oireachtas Sub-Committee.
