German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that the sanctions against Russia cannot be abolished at the moment due to the renewed violence in eastern Ukraine, during a joint press conference with the Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo in Warsaw, Tuesday.

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): "Just today I have spoken on the phone with the Russian President, because the situation [in eastern Ukraine] worries us and we have arranged so that further steps could be taken in the Normandy format. As before, the situation is dissatisfying, the Minsk agreement hasn't been implemented and therefore at present the sanctions cannot be abolished."

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): "Once more back to politics: with regard to this, the cooperation in the field of defence is very important. We have talked about the German contributions in connection to the strengthening of the eastern dimension. And I have, once more, made clear that Germany knows that it must further increase its defence spending. It increased five percent from last year to this year. And this will enable us also even within the European Union – not in contrast to NATO, but among European partners – to work closer together in the security sector. And I think Germany and Poland have similar views with regard to this."

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): "From my side I want to say the following about the transatlantic relations: We as Germany and Europe have an immanent interest for good transatlantic relations on the basis of out common values. And what comes to the different statements made my the President and the foreign and defence ministers towards NATO, I believe they are important declarations and we will use the opportunity to get together on this inside NATO, and talk about the future and the tasks it is facing. All other things we will explore step by step, which kind of possibilities and situations we have concerning especially trade. I have always been of the opinion that we need to have a free trade deal with the Canada and USA, others have had the same opinion as well, and now we need to see how the new administration proceeds with it.
