The history of Kiev (Kyiv) , the largest city and the capital of Ukraine , is long and remarkable. The exact moment of the founding of the city is difficult to determine. Legend has it that the birthplace of a great city in the future Kiev area was prophesied by Saint Andrew (in AD 60-70) fascinated by the spectacular location of the mountainous banks of the Dnieper River . The city is believed to have existed as early as the beginning of the 5th century, initially establishing itself as a commercial enclave. Gradually gains importance as the center of East Slavic civilization , with Kiev reaching its Golden Age as the center of Kiev Rus.between the 10th and 12th centuries.
