Toruń, Poland is a stunningly well preserved medieval city that is now protected by UNESCO. Unlike many other parts of Poland, Toruń has never been destroyed so the old town is like an outdoor museum. Taking a stroll is a lesson in the history of architecture. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1236 (the castle ruins are still here), Toruń is perhaps best known as the birthplace of genius Renaissance man, Nicolaus Copernicus. Amongst many things, he is credited with coming up with a heliocentric model of the universe and changing the course of science. Toruń is also known for its gingerbread, which it's been making since the fourteenth century. Toruń is a true gem within Europe that somehow isn't full of the crowds of tourists and high price tags you find in many other such fairy tale towns.
