Ukraine Eastern Europe
The Republic of Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. The third-largest country in Europe by area, it is bordered by Belarus to the north, Poland and Slovakia to the west, Romania and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea to the south. The capital, Kyiv, is located on the Dnieper River in the north-central part of the country. The population of Ukraine is about 42 million people, making it the 32nd most populous country in the world.
Ukraine’s history is long and complex, marked by periods of both calm and turmoil. The country has been inhabited since the Upper Paleolithic era, but the first recorded state on Ukrainian territory was the Rus’ polity, founded in the late 9th century. The territory was then controlled by a series of states and empires through the Middle Ages and early modern period, including the Khazar Khanate, Kievan Rus’, Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Cossack Hetmanate, the Polish–Russian War of 1654–1667, and the Russian Empire. After the Russian Revolution and Ukrainian War of Independence in 1917–1921, a period of successive Soviet regimes began in 1922.
