The Hidden Country of…
Transnistria, officially known as Pridnestrovie, is a narrow strip of land in Moldova that declared its own independence.
Located on the Moldovan–Ukrainian border, it’s controlled by Russian soldiers to keep the peace between Moldovans and Transnistrians.
Most governments consider Transnistria a “no-go” zone… so of course, I had to check it out.
I joined a group tour with Moldovatour, who picked me up in Chișinău and drove us to Transnistria.
At the border, the tour guide clearly told me not to film anything military-related. I thought I could be sneaky, I couldn’t.
A Russian soldier asked who filmed, and I admitted it was me. I was told to delete everything, but luckily I’d already saved the clip to iCloud, so now you can see what the border crossing looks like.
After that, we visited a small museum, had lunch at an old Soviet-style canteen, and then explored Tiraspol, the so-called capital. Classic Soviet vibes, Lenin statues, and communist art everywhere.
We ended the day in Bender, home to an impressive Ottoman fortress and an amazing sunset.
Overall, it was a great trip and felt completely safe. I get the government warnings, if something goes wrong, your embassy can’t help. But the streets were clean, the people were friendly, and everything felt calm.
Do your research, but trust the locals. If they say it’s safe, it’s safe.
