Have you ever looked at a map of Europe and wondered why Moldova is landlocked? It sits so close to the Black Sea—just a sliver of land away—yet it has no coastline. How did this small nation end up cut off from the sea? The answer lies deep in centuries of history, empire, and geopolitics.

Moldova is wedged between two larger neighbors: Romania and Ukraine. But the tiny strip of land that blocks its access to the sea is called Budjak, today part of southern Ukraine. So how did this piece of land slip away from Moldova?

To understand that, we need to go back in time.

For centuries, this region was a battleground for powerful empires—the Ottomans, the Russian Empire, and later the Soviet Union. Budjak changed hands multiple times. But everything changed in 1940, during World War II, when the Soviets redrew the borders. They gave Budjak to Ukraine instead of Moldova.

Why? Because Ukraine was seen as more reliable than the newly created Moldavian Soviet Republic. The area was home to a mix of Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Gagauz, and Russians—not a Romanian-speaking majority like Moldova. And by giving this land to Ukraine, Moscow made Moldova smaller, weaker, and easier to control.

So what does this mean today?

Even without a coastline, Moldova adapts. It relies on Ukraine’s port of Odesa, just 40 km away, and still has access to the Danube River through a tiny stretch of land near Giurgiulești. Its economy focuses on agriculture—especially wine—and its identity has been shaped by being landlocked between two bigger nations.

So, why is Moldova landlocked? Because of centuries of shifting borders, imperial ambitions, and one fateful decision by the Soviet Union.
