Ferragudo, is the charming and largely unspoilt fishing village in the Algarve. Located close to the mouth of Rio Arade estuary and at the Western border of the Lagoa municipality, it is well worth a visit.

Unlike its neighboring resorts across the water of Portimão and Praia da Rocha, Ferragudo has managed to keep below the radar, in terms of becoming a commercial tourist hotspot. Ferragudo is unique in that it is where the sea turns into a river providing a wonderful landscape.

However, there is still plenty to do in Ferragudo and whether it is just chilling out by the sea or exploring the old village, you won’t be disappointed.

The main centre ‘Praça Rainha Dona Leonor’ is where you will find plenty of cafes and restaurants and is a great place to enjoy a drink and something to eat, while soaking up the village atmosphere and the sun!

The village itself, is a maze of cobbled streets, with whitewashed buildings, which provide the charm and unique character of the village.

The church is also a prominent feature of the village and sits on the hillside overlooking the village. From the church, you can enjoy panoramic views across the river and neighbouring resorts.

Beach:

The main beach in Ferragudo, is called ‘Praia Grande’ and consists of a large open space of golden sands. The beach is the perfect place for chilling out and enjoy the calm waters and sun and it is also a playground for many water sports enthusiasts.

Praia da Angrinha, is also another beach that is close to Ferragudo and is a popular choice with many.

Waterfront and Riverside:

Along the waterfront and riverside, you will find several restaurants that serve the ‘catch of the day’ and certainly offer a great place to watch the world go by.

Castle - Fort:

Fort of São João do Arade or Castle of Arade - Castelo de São João do Arade, is a medieval fort that is a popular attraction in Ferragudo. The Fort/Castle is located by the sea and is believed to date back to 1640.
