Having left the UK some 13 years ago and lived both in the Gulf region and latterly in Ukraine the title of ‘Long Term expat ‘ is perhaps very apt.
Living outside ones comfort zone in an unfamiliar territory with often strange and differing cultures , practices, conditions not to mention the L-word ( language) can be a daunting experience.
With time these differences become the norm and are embraced allowing more cultural crossover and better understanding which is so rewarding.
Here in Ukraine I explain the key differences between living in the glitz and glamour that is Dubai ( aka the jewel in the Middle East crown) and the port city that is Odesa.
There are vast contrasts between living in the
two regions both in terms of freedom of movement, attitudes to the ongoing pandemic, expat lifestyles, cost of living and ease of residential status.
The video shows a stroll along the popular region of Odesa that is Arkadia as well as the neighbouring Fontan and Oktrada beach areas.
At the time of filming the country was in the grips of preparing for Independence Day celebrations and there’s an interesting contrast between the carefree tourist zones shadowed by the military hardware muscle flexing!
For me Ukraine has something for everyone but you only appreciate this if you put in the time and effort to explore and try and amalgamate with the local cultures to give a truer perspective.
