Mineral spas are ancient and natural healing centres. Whether they're based around drinking water (to cure such problems as stomach, liver, kidney or other ailments) or for bathing in geothermal pools (for skin, muscles, bones), they're a part of Central and Eastern European life - and have been for centuries. This summer we decided to visit some of the best and most famous spas in our region of Europe - from Krynica Zdroj in Poland, also famous for skiing in winter, to Bardejovske Kupele in Eastern Slovakia, to the hot geothermal pools in Balmazújváros, Hungary, near the city of Debrecen and the Romanian border. Along the way we tried out many of the various local attractions, such as the famous historic Bardejovsky Jarmok street market, the absolutely immense Nyíregyháza zoo (one day is not enough to properly walk around it), to a Land Rover safari on the Great Hungarian Plain to see prehistoric animals brought back to life - the giant Auroch and Przewalski's horse. It was a great escape from chopping wood constantly in preparation for winter...
