On Day 5 of our trip, I explore the wonderful fortified Saxon churches of Transylvania. Home for centuries to a Saxon population who built their communities around these incredible churches, part temple, part castle. Following World War II, the Saxons began to leave, emigrating to Germany, leaving their churches unused and in peril of decaying. Thankfully, some are now protected by UNESCO and many others are being restored.
