If you are looking for a travel destination WAY OFF THE BEATEN PATH, Transnistria might be just what you're looking for. Eastern Europe doesn't get more unique than this where a part of Moldova broke off as its own republic after the USSR split up. Transnistria has its own government, issues its own passports, has its own currency (that you cannot use anywhere else in the world!), its own flag (with the sickle and the hammer of course) and even a national anthem!

The country is NOT recognized by any other UN country except for the not recognized territories of South Ossetia, Nagorno-Karabakh and Abkhazia.

It was a unique experience and if you want to have the sensation of being stuck in the 80s, I strongly encourage you to visit this incredible territory.
